Fertilization is the union of a sperm and egg to form a zygote. Cleavage serves two main purposes, it forms a multicellular embryo and organizes the embryo into developmental regions. Implantation is when a fertilized egg or blastocyst has attached to the lining of the uterine wall. It marks the beginning of pregnancy.

Chance of miscarriage drops. During the second trimester, the fetus will start to develop facial features. The third trimester is the final part of pregnancy. Throughout the third trimester, the fetus gains weight quickly. At delivery, the baby is about 18 to 20 inches long and weighs about 7 pounds.
